Deadlines have a way of making even experienced artists freeze.
You know you need ideas, but the harder you try to force one, the more predictable everything starts to feel.
This guide gives you a process to fall back on when inspiration is not cooperating.
Inside, you’ll explore several brainstorming approaches that help you generate more possibilities, make surprising connections, and move beyond your first obvious solution. Some methods are fast and structured. Others are playful and visual. The goal is not to find one perfect formula, but to build a toolkit you can return to whenever you feel stuck.
These are not exercises I invented just for a workbook. They grew out of my own experience working in interpretive illustration, editorial illustration, and children’s publishing, where coming up with ideas was part of the job. I created this guide to give you a few of the tools I learned to rely on when the deadline was real and the ideas still had to come.
This guide is especially useful if you work with visual concepts, client briefs, assignments, personal projects, or any creative problem that starts with the question, “What am I going to do?”
